The Bible Is All the Truth You Need

Humans have a tendency to consider traditions, things their family believes, and things that make them feel good instead of the honest truth of the Bible. As a result Christianity has become twisted into many different denominations instead of a unified body of believers who bear with one another.

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4

Jesus said that He would send the Holy Spirit to His apostles to guide His them in all truth and call to their remembrance the things that He taught (John 14:16). He told them He would always be with them (Matthew 28:20). And we have their inspired Gospel accounts and epistles to understand what God wants us to know.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Jesus told the apostles that the Holy Spirit would come and teach them in all truth. So the words they wrote down were inspired by the truth taught to them by Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

People don’t respect or honor the Bible because it instructs is in ways contrary to what we want to hear. This problem is nothing new. People don’t want the Word to step on our toes. It’s not the preacher’s fault if he teaches the truth in love.

For they are a rebellious people, lying children, children unwilling to hear the instruction of the Lord; who say to the seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us what is right; speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions… Isaiah 30:9-10

We shouldn’t think about man’s opinion more than God’a word.

I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. 1 Corinthians 4:6

If we have a faulty view of God’s Word then we will have a faulty understanding of what God expects for us. We start to think to much about our own opinions. One of the last things Jesus said to His disciples was to go out and make disciples and He said that He would be with them to the end. They didn’t need any more (Matthew 28:30).

Jude 3 tells us the Word was delivered to the saints once and for all time. There is nothing else to add to it.

The authority we need for religious direction and inspiration is all contained in the Bible. Even Bible colleges, religious periodicals, and commentaries from faithful Christians do not trump the Bible. Preachers are not above the Bible. Elders are not above the Bible. No one person, not the Pope, not a council, not a convention, is above the Bible. If someone claims otherwise there must be proof from the Scriptures.

Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. Acts 17:11

Handle the Word of truth rightly (2 Timothy 2:15), with the right respect, faith, and humility that will give you appropriate understanding of its truths. By doing so, we won’t jump to conclusions in our ignorance or impetuousness. If we do so, we won’t use the Word to prove what we already believe. If we do so, we won’t take parts out of context. We must be a people who study it and know it to such a degree that we understand how it all works together.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:6-8

Whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:11

Let us always look to the Bible for our authority in religion and not think too highly of our own opinions and traditions.
